“We tried to love each other during the months of June, July, and August. We figured if we couldn’t make it work then — if we couldn’t open our hearts to each other when the sun was shining, the grass was green, and our legs were exposed — we couldn’t make it work at all. Summer is shorthand for the easy life. You’re more inclined to love then. You want to walk around outside with somebody and drink beers on some rooftop and fall asleep in your summer dress on the subway because the heat is beating down on you and causing your eyes to close. Your eyelids just feel so damn heavy and everything’s sticking to you, including love.”

Things You Learn After Your First Heartbreak

“You learn how bad heartbreak can hurt. All of a sudden you’ll be relating to sad love songs and feeling like such a chump. You listened to them before but never quite understood why they had so much resonance with people. Then you realized that it’s strictly for people who’ve dealt with the loss of love. To get the full effect of a Patsy Cline song, someone has to take an emotional dump on your face. Otherwise you’ll just be like “Gee, this lady sure sounds sad!”

“Upon realizing you no longer love your ex, you’re relieved. Finally. Finally you can stop half-assing your life, cautiously keeping your distance from certain people, places, objects and times of day for fear of another meltdown. You’re excited to finally be able to listen to that one song all the way through, the one you loved so much before you associated it with them and could no longer stomach. It’s yours again. You have it back. You can finally chill out and go on that nerve-free coffee date with the mutual friend you’ve been avoiding. You can eat grilled cheese totally objectively once again, indifferent to the fact that they liked it with a ridiculous amount of sriracha or the fact that you, in hopeful displays of affection, used to draw sriracha hearts on top of their grilled cheese sandwiches.”

“Loving you felt awful because I was reminded every second of how much it wasn’t reciprocated. The more affection I showed you, the bigger the divide in our bed would be. People tell me that there always has to be someone who’s loved less in a relationship and, if that’s true, I’m starting to wonder if that person will always be me. Am I just more comfortable tackling someone who’s perceived as a challenge? Am I just more comfortable working hard for some small token of affection? It scares me that this might be who I am but I also feel powerless to change it. I’ve been taught now to expect inequity in the love department. I don’t know if I would be able to even accept an equal amount of love.”

“Long-distance relationships only work for people who like to cheat or be cheated upon or for low self esteem drips or co-dependant numpties.”
